SAN DIEGO : Off-Duty Officer Is Hurt in Brawl

An off-duty San Diego police officer was injured Tuesday in an altercation with two transients, police said.

According to a police report of the incident, the unidentified officer fired at least one shot from his handgun without hitting the suspects.

The incident began at 7:22 p.m. Tuesday near the corner of 13th and Market streets. A police report of the incident said two men approached the officer and his friends, and a fight started. The officer was hit on the head with a golf club, and the suspects fled.

At one point during the fight, the officer pulled his handgun and fired, police said. He suffered lacerations at the back of the head and was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Two men were arrested a short time later, less than a block from the the shooting. Their names were not available.
