Free prostate cancer screenings will be offered at a National City hospital next month, officials announced Wednesday.

The screenings, open to men of all ages, will be given from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 and from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Paradise Valley Hospital. Telephone 479-2442 for appointments.

This year, about 35,000 American men will die of prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. An additional 130,000 to 150,000 cases are expected to be diagnosed. The cancer can usually be treated if it is detected at an early stage.

“Prostate cancer awareness is undergoing the same type of transformation that breast cancer awareness saw,” said Dr. Daniel Hunting, a urologist at the hospital. “With more public awareness and research, we expect cure rates to continue to rise.”
