Pioline took advantages of two lapses of concentration by Lendl in the deciding games of each set.

In the first set, Lendl was serving at 5-6, but argued over a line call that eventually gave the game and first set to Pioline.

In the second, at 4-5, a double fault by Lendl helped Pioline win the game at love and oust Lendl from the tournament he won in 1989.

Magnus Gustafsson, who twisted his ankle in practice this week, was dropped from the Swedish team for the Davis Cup semifinals against the United States next weekend at Minneapolis.

Christian Bergstrom or Nicklas Kulti will replace Gustafsson, who won three Davis Cup singles matches earlier this year, including a five-set clincher in the quarterfinals against Canada.

Gustafsson and Magnus Larsson were competing for the No. 2 singles berth. The first belongs to Stefan Edberg, who regained his world No. 1 ranking by winning his second consecutive U.S. Open title last Sunday.

Swedish Captain John Anders Sjogren said he will not pick a substitute for Gustafsson until next week, possibly as late as Thursday’s draw in Minneapolis, where the semifinal will be played on indoor clay.

The Swedish team will leave for the United States today. Edberg, who has been in the United States since the Open, is expected to team with Anders Jarryd in the doubles match.
