A man driving the wrong direction on the Long Beach Freeway collided head-on with another car Sunday morning, killing himself and his passenger, police said.

Officers used the Jaws of Life to extract the bodies of the wrong-way driver and his passenger from the 1968 Volkswagen Beetle they were in, investigators in Long Beach said.

Police did not release the victims’ names pending notification of relatives.

The Volkswagen was northbound in the southbound fast lane about 3:45 a.m. when it slammed head-on into a 1989 Mitsubishi at the 6th Street exit, Officer Joe Camron said.

The Mitsubishi’s driver, Mark Durham, 36, and his passenger--both of whom were wearing seat belts--were treated for minor injuries at the scene, officers said.
