Share

State and local water experts will debate how Gov. Pete Wilson’s new water policy will affect Ventura County at a forum Sept. 30 in Oxnard.

More than 100 representatives of area business, agriculture, government and environmental interests are expected to attend the debate, which is also open to the public.

The panel of water experts includes Robert Potter, chief deputy director of the California Department of Water Resources; Conner Everts, a consultant and environmentalist; Donald Kendall, general manger of Calleguas Municipal Water District; Rex Laird, executive director of the Ventura County Farm Bureau, and Robert Paulger, technical services and public relations manager at Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co. in Oxnard.

The governor’s new policy calls for equal priority for water deliveries to urban, agriculture and environmental interests. Wilson also wants to build three new reservoirs to increase water storage during wet years and take over operation of the federal Central Valley Project pipeline.

Wilson would also like local areas to use regional water banking, a system in which agencies with water to spare sell it to other areas that need more than what is available.

The two-hour forum, sponsored by the Southern California Water Committee, will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Financial Plaza Hilton in Oxnard. The cost is $20 to the public. Reservations are advised. For information, call (714) 261-7466.
