An off-duty Los Angeles County safety police officer was in stable condition Saturday after he was shot three times during a confrontation with three men outside his South-Central Los Angeles home, authorities said.

The 34-year-old officer, a five-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, was shot once in the torso and twice in the leg, said Deputy Patrick Hauser, who declined to identify the victim.

The shooting took place about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when the officer confronted three men loitering outside his home in the 700 block of West 107th Street, Hauser said.

The officer, who was hosting a party at his home, asked the men to leave, Hauser said. The men refused and one man drew a gun and fired several rounds at the officer, Hauser said.

The officer returned fire with his service revolver, but officials did not know whether he hit any of the men. The officer was taken to County-USC Medical Center.

A safety officer is a sworn member of the Sheriff’s Department who provides security at county facilities such as museums, hospitals and some parks.
