EAST ROUNDUP : Penn State Beats Maryland Again

Richie Anderson ran for 138 yards and scored a career-high four touchdowns Saturday as ninth-ranked Penn State beat Maryland, 49-13, at State College, Pa.

Anderson scored on runs of six, 25 and 22 yards and caught a 26-yard pass from John Sacca to lead the Nittany Lions (4-0). It was Anderson’s second 100-yard game of the season and fifth in his two-year college career.

The Terrapins (0-4) took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, but fell behind as Penn State--which has scored 150 points its last three games--got three touchdowns before halftime.

West Virginia 16, Virginia Tech 7--Adrian Murrell ran for 157 yards and backup Jon Jones scored two touchdowns at Blacksburg, Va., as the Mountaineers remained unbeaten.

Virginia Tech, 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big East, came in averaging 412 yards and 34 points per game. But the Mountaineers (3-0-1, 2-0) gave up only 237 yards.

Rutgers 40, Navy 0--The Midshipmen (0-3) were shut out for the third consecutive game, falling at Annapolis, Md., as Craig Mitter ran for three touchdowns.

Rutgers improved to 3-1.

The Citadel 15, Army 14--Jeff Trinh kicked a 37-yard field goal with 2:47 left and Everette Sands rushed for 173 yards and one touchdown at West Point, N.Y., as the Division I-AA Bulldogs improved to 4-0 and beat a I-A team for the sixth time in seven tries.

Army is 1-2.

Princeton 38, Lafayette 35--Keith Elias turned in the greatest rushing performance in Tiger history, running for 299 yards and four touchdowns in the win at Princeton, N.J.

The 25-carry performance broke the 40-year-old mark of 273 yards set by Homer Smith in 1952. Smith is the offensive coordinator at UCLA.

Princeton is 2-0, Lafayette 2-1.

Cornell 29, Lehigh 23--Bill Lazor threw for 262 yards for Cornell (1-1) at Ithaca, N.Y.

Lehigh is 1-2.

Columbia 18, Fordham 9--The Lions beat a team from outside the Ivy League for the first time in 12 seasons and broke a seven-game losing streak with the victory at New York.

New Hampshire 47, Dartmouth 27--Barry Bourassa ran for 137 yards and Jim Stayer passed for 295 in his first start as New Hampshire (2-2) overcame a 17-0 deficit at Hanover, N.H.

New Hampshire is 2-2.

Penn 24, Colgate 0--Sundiata Rush ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns at Philadelphia as the Quakers (1-1) got their first victory under Coach Al Bagnoli and their first shutout in four years.

Colgate is 1-2.

Bucknell 33, Brown 14--Travis Kopp threw three touchdown passes, two to Matt Walsh, to lead Bucknell (2-2) at Lewisburg, Pa, and drop Brown to 0-2.

William & Mary 36, Harvard 16--Shawn Knight ran for a touchdown and threw for one in the victory in the rain at Cambridge, Mass.

Knight completed 13 of 22 passes for 192 yards without an interception and rushed six times for 35 yards as William & Mary (3-0) accumulated 412 yards.

Harvard dropped to 1-1.

Yale 7, Holy Cross 3--Holy Cross’ 22-game winning streak against Ivy League teams was snapped at New Haven, Conn.

Yale is 2-0, Holy Cross 0-3.
