Northern Iowa Settles an Old Score With a 27-10 Defeat of Iowa State
Freshman Scott Obermeier kicked four field goals, the first of his college career, and Jason McCleary returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown as Northern Iowa beat Iowa State, 27-10, Saturday for its first victory over the Cyclones in 92 years.
The Division I-AA Panthers (3-0) used their quickness on defense to offset Iowa State’s size advantage in the line and sacked quarterback Bob Utter eight times.
Iowa State (2-2) had hoped to overpower Northern Iowa with its running game but managed only two yards rushing in the first quarter and 59 for the game. The Cyclones also had five turnovers.
Northern Iowa’s only other victory over Iowa State was in 1900. Iowa State leads the series 13-2-3.
