Four previous albums have established this insufficiently appreciated Minnesota native as a purveyor of insightful, strongly melodic pop-rock that carries moral and emotional weight. Hey, if you’re Bob Dylan’s son-in-law, as Himmelman is, you can’t be a slouch. “Flown This Acid World” (the title song is about transcendence, though not through hallucinogens) is loaded with directly emotional, simply-stated haymakers about feelings so fundamental that they readily hit home. The honed and varied rock attack of Himmelman’s veteran supporting band ensures that they do.

(Himmelman plays Nov. 21 at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano . )
