Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes’ 100th victory came with such ease Thursday night at Cerritos that the public address announcer couldn’t even wait until the end of game.

Los Alamitos defeated Bishop Montgomery, 42-0, in a nonleague game at Gahr High.

With 6 minutes 18 seconds left, the announcer broadcast congratulations to Barnes on the milestone. Barnes has a 100-45-5 record in his 14th year at Los Alamitos.

“It really does mean a lot to me,” Barnes said. “It also means you’re old and you’ve been around a long time and had a lot of good players and a lot of good assistant coaches.”

Among the best players Barnes has had in recent years is his current quarterback Tim Carey. Carey, a senior who led the Griffins (4-0) to a Southern Section title in 1991, completed 17 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns against Bishop Montgomery (1-1-2).

All three scoring passes were to standout wide receiver George Sagen. Sagen, whose scoring catches covered 11, 11, and 13 yards, finished with seven catches for 117 yards.

Don Ruberio had four catches for 71 yards and Brad Melsby added four catches for 62 yards.

It was obvious early that it was Los Alamitos’ night. The Griffins fumbled twice on the opening drive but recovered each time and went on to score on a two-yard dive by Jake Beeney.

Los Alamitos led, 14-0, at the end of the first quarter and Clay Kemp scored on an 11-yard run with 11:16 left in the half to put the Griffins up, 21-0.

Ben Ortega broke a 47-yard run off a draw for a touchdown with 6:41 left in the half. Sagen and Carey hooked up for an 11-yard touchdown with 3:58 left in the half and Los Alamitos took a 35-0 lead at the half.
