Bungee jumping has come to the 28th annual Frontier Days Fair in Canyon Country--for a price.

Would-be jumpers pay $50 for the privilege of plunging from a 135-foot platform. Another $20 buys a video of your not-so-cheap thrill.

Canyon Country Chamber of Commerce President Jack Watkins said he thinks he wants to jump.

“I’m about 95% sure,” Watkins said. “But I have to take a look at it first.”

Watkins said Vertical Addictions Inc. has offered bungee jumping at several fairs across California, most recently at the Antelope Valley Fair.

“We’ve added more arts and crafts, a chili cook-off, bungee jumping and barrel racing,” said Carolyn Tyree, Canyon Country Chamber of Commerce executive director.

The rodeo will be back, as well as helicopter, wagon and pony rides and a petting zoo.

Live country-Western music, carnival rides and games, an antique tractor display and a Wild West stunt show also will be featured.

“It’s great family fun,” Tyree said. “We’ve had people coming here for 28 years. Some of the local high school graduates use Frontier Days as an unofficial reunion.”

More than 35 arts and crafts vendors will offer wares, and a commercial tent will feature booths selling products or offering information.

Several local politicians will be represented in the commercial tent.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the Frontier Days parade will roll down Soledad Canyon Road. This year, congressional candidate Buck McKeon will be grand marshal.

Tyree said the fair serves a dual purpose for the community.

“It’s the largest community event in the Santa Clarita Valley,” she said. “It’s a fund-raiser, and also it brings the community and business together, because both businesses and nonprofit organizations participate.”

Tyree said attendance is expected to top last year’s 45,000.

Helicopter rides for $20 will be available throughout the weekend.

The barrel race, set for 4 p.m. Saturday, is for preregistered racers who have paid a $25 entry fee, but spectators can watch for free.

The chili cook-off begins at 10 a.m. Sunday and also will be restricted to local preregistered cooks, but anyone can have a taste for 50 cents, Tyree said.

Country-Western groups performing throughout the fair include Ken Finley and the Mint Canyon Boys, Ron Marshall and Silvercreek, the Dale Honsinger Band, Kent Gray and Overland Express, and Darlene O’Connell and the Dixie Flyers.
