Dave Winfield was voted winner of the first Branch Rickey Award for service to the community. Each of baseball’s 26 clubs nominated a player, manager or executive for the award, sponsored by Rotary International. Award chairman Jim Wilkins cited Toronto’s Winfield for “his high ethical standards and unselfish contributions.”

Gaston, on the way Winfield presides over a kangaroo court that levels fines against Blue Jay players and coaches: “When I’m not in the clubhouse, he carries a big stick. But he’s just a judge. I’m the Supreme Court.”
