John McEnroe’s dream of one last title in Australia ended when top-seeded Stefan Edberg defeated him, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the $1.1-million Sydney Indoor tournament Friday.

Edberg, the U.S. Open champion, will meet No. 12 Henrik Holm in the semifinals. Holm beat unseeded Patrik Kuhnen, 6-3, 6-2.

“He was physically and mentally just a step ahead of me,” said McEnroe, who had won the event in his four previous appearances, from 1980-83. “I felt I played well, but he played better. You can’t afford to miss any balls when he’s playing that well.”

Second-seeded Goran Ivanisevic struggled past doubles partner Paul Haarhuis, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, and will meet No. 6 Richard Krajicek in a matchup of two of the sport’s biggest hitters.

Krajicek warmed up for the showdown by hitting 14 aces and 20 other service winners in a 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory over fourth-seeded Ivan Lendl, who complained so strenuously about line calls that he was warned for verbal abuse.
