Suspect in Street Robbery Is Chased, Killed by Deputy
A man suspected of robbing another man of about $200 on a Long Beach street was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Stoneman said the shooting occurred about 11:20 a.m. at 61st Street and Atlantic Avenue. The suspect, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, died Tuesday night at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, he said.
Investigators said the pursuit began after two women who had chased the man for several blocks after the robbery summoned the deputy.
Stoneman said that during the pursuit, the deputy, “knowing that the suspect was armed and at one point fearing for his life and believing the suspect was reaching for the gun, fired several shots, striking the suspect in the upper torso once.”
The suspect, 31, was wounded and arrested a short distance away, investigators said.
Authorities said deputies searched for a gun after arresting him but found none.
Stoneman said the dead man stole about $200 in the 6100 block of Linden Avenue.
Witnesses told deputies that the suspect had tried to sell a gun to at least two people before the robbery.
