PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Alexander Wright Joins Team

After passing a physical Tuesday morning, wide receiver/kick returner Alexander Wright officially became a Raider hours before the trading deadline.

In exchange for Wright, the Dallas Cowboys will receive an early- to middle-round draft choice, depending on Wright’s playing time.

Wright is expected to be used on kick returns. As he learns the offense, the 25-year-old from Auburn also will be utilized as an extra receiver.

With the Cowboys’ depth of receivers, Wright didn’t catch a pass in the three games he played for Dallas this season.

He did return eight kicks for 117 yards, averaging 14.6 yards per return.

In his two previous seasons with the Cowboys, Wright caught a total of 21 passes for 274 yards. He also returned 33 kicks, averaging 23.9 yards per return.

Wright was even used sparingly as a ballcarrier, rushing five times for 25 yards.

Wright’s biggest asset is his speed. He won the NFL’s fastest man competition last June, making him an ideal complement to Tim Brown and Willie Gault in the Raiders’ speed-driven passing game.

“We’re saving a spot for him on the Raiders’ 4x100 relay team,” joked Al LoCasale, Raider executive assistant.

To make room for Wright, who will wear No. 89, the Raiders again waived quarterback Vince Evans.

Evans, who has not appeared in a game this season, has been bouncing back and forth between the Raiders and the waiver list this year.
