PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : In Terms of Records, It Gets Better

The 1991 Rams were 3-3 at this point last season, dangling on the precipice of a free fall to 3-13. This year, they are 2-4, but it’s fair to say things are looking up.

The four losses came on the road against Buffalo, Miami, San Francisco and New Orleans, all very tough teams and difficult venues for visitors to pull out a victory. This season, the Bills, Dolphins, 49ers and Saints are a combined 8-3 at home and 18-5 overall.

The Rams’ next three opponents--the New York Giants, Atlanta and Phoenix--are a combined 5-11, and the Rams get the Giants and Cardinals at Anaheim Stadium.

Asked if his young team might lose its edge because of the frustration of close, difficult losses to San Francisco (27-24) and New Orleans (13-10), Coach Chuck Knox was quick with his standard reply: Hard work cures all ills.

“I think that’s always a concern,” he said, “but you have to build upon one thing: The reason you were hired on here was to do the best that you can do. That’s in practice. That’s preparation during the week. And that’s every day. You are a professional.”

So far, Knox seemed satisfied that the players are giving their all.

“I’m not happy with the fact that we’re 2-4, obviously, but we are making progress,” he said.

Backup middle linebacker Leon White, a 6-foot-3, 242-pound seven-year veteran acquired off waivers Sept. 22, might be seeing more action in upcoming weeks. White, already a starter on the goal-line team, had an interception in the end zone and a 40-yard return against the Saints Sunday. . . . Injury update: Flipper Anderson, who missed a couple days of practice last week because of a sore hamstring, is still hobbled but but is expected to be ready Sunday. Safety Pat Terrell, who suffered a hip pointer against the Saints, is also expected to play.
