ARCADIA : Unarmed Robbery Suspect Slain During Police Pursuit

Share

A 22-year-old, unarmed robbery suspect was shot and killed Wednesday morning by an Arcadia police officer who thought the man was reaching for a weapon while fleeing from police, authorities said.

Officers were summoned to a 7-Eleven at 200 E. Live Oak Ave. shortly after 3:30 a.m., where the clerk said he had been robbed of $200 by a thief who fled in a red Datsun or Nissan sedan. Police saw a car matching the description, but it sped off through city streets into El Monte and onto the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway. Three patrol cars pursued.

The driver abandoned the car at Durfee Road and fled into the back yard of a home on Exline Street in El Monte, where he was shot once in the chest by a pursuing officer. The officer thought the man was reaching for a weapon in his waistband, police said.
