Party Raises $100,000 for Research

Concern II, a volunteer organization dedicated to funding children’s cancer research, raised $100,000 at its seventh annual “The Voyage to Conquer Cancer--A Casino on the High Seas” benefit. The more than 1,700 guests who attended the party at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood enjoyed food donated by California Pizza Kitchen, Chin Chin, Louise’s Trattoria, Eduardo’s Border Grill, Factor’s Delicatessen, Orleans Restaurant and Someone’s in the Kitchen. American Airlines donated a round-trip ticket for two to London, with hotel accommodations. Princess Cruise Lines donated a cruise. Money raised at the event will fund continuing research at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Michigan Cancer Foundation, Hebrew University and UCLA.

TreePeople’s sixth annual “Evening Under the Harvest Moon” benefit, held Sept. 26 at TreePeople headquarters on Mulholland Drive, netted about $225,000. Proceeds will support efforts to involve people throughout Los Angeles in repairing the environment. The organization’s volunteers planted more than 50,000 trees last year in the Los Angeles area. David Zucker, Marshall Herskovitz and Dan Pearlman were chairmen of the event, which was underwritten by Glenn and Tony Thomas.

West Coast Friends of Bar-Ilan University in Israel netted $100,000 Sept. 10 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The gala honored actor Alan Rachins. Proceeds will fund cancer and AIDS research at the university.

Pediatric AIDS Foundation received a $4,000 donation from Mark Stevens, owner of the Gym, a new training facility in Brentwood. The money represents proceeds from the Gym’s Aug. 25 grand opening party and auction of items such as a hockey stick from Wayne Gretzky and a “City Slickers” script autographed by Billy Crystal.

Sundance Institute raised $45,000 at an Oct. 1 benefit premiere screening of “A River Runs Through It” at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The institute is dedicated to the support and development of emerging filmmakers and to the exhibition of independent dramatic and documentary films.

Toni Adams Memorial Cancer Fund benefited from funds raised by the Santa Monica Yacht Club at a Monte Carlo Night party Sept. 12. The proceeds, $11,000, will be used to build, furnish and equip a long-needed patient/family education unit on the oncology floor at Santa Monica Hospital.
