Irish band U2 will end its North American tour with a show at Anaheim Stadium on Nov. 14--the first rock concert at the stadium in more than five years.

Tickets go on sale Saturday at 9 a.m., by phone, at Ticketmaster outlets at Music Plus and Tower Records stores, and at Gate 3 at Anaheim Stadium. Numbered wristbands will be issued at 8 a.m. at all outlets, with no lining up permitted before 7 a.m. The numbers for phone orders are (714) 740-2000 and (213) 480-3232.

U2 has already sold out its two-night stand at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Oct. 30 and 31. Tickets are still available for the group’s Nov. 10 concert at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.

Anaheim Stadium hosted concerts by Madonna, the Grateful Dead and David Bowie during 1987. Bowie’s two concerts on Aug. 8 and 9 of that year were the last rock shows at the stadium until now.

“I’ve always wanted to do concerts. We’ve never had a ban or anything like that,” stadium General Manager Greg Smith said Thursday. But the fact that Anaheim Stadium is home to two professional sports teams--the California Angels and the Los Angeles Rams--makes it difficult to find the weekend nights that concert promoters want during the summer, when most stadium acts tour, Smith said. Instead, stadium-sized rock attractions hoping to draw from the Orange County market have played the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Dodger Stadium or the Rose Bowl.

A special protective fabric called Geotextile will be used to protect the stadium grass during the U2 concert.

U2’s Dodger Stadium shows, with a capacity of 54,000, both were quick sellouts. It took 36 minutes for fans to buy all the seats for the first show, and less than two days to sell out the second show, according to Robert Hartung, spokesman for Avalon Attractions, which is promoting all four of U2’s Southland shows. About 50,000 tickets will be available for the Anaheim Stadium concert. The stadium’s peak capacity for concerts is 73,000, Smith said, but U2’s “huge” stage production requires that many seats be blocked off.
