SIMI VALLEY : Tapo Canyon Road Section to Open

Share

Simi Valley officials will open the long-delayed extension of Tapo Canyon Road between Cochran Street and Royal Avenue on Monday, marking the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

After the 4 p.m. ceremony, the four-lane street will be opened to north and south traffic. It is expected to divert cars and trucks that now use Tapo Street and Sequoia Avenue.

City engineer George Berg said the project, which included the construction of a railroad crossing, cost about $4 million.

The road extension was planned before the city’s incorporation in 1969, Berg said.

In recent years, however, the project has been delayed by complex negotiations with Southern Pacific Transportation Co., which initially wanted the city to build a much more costly overpass or underpass at the tracks, the city engineer said.

The construction work, which took about one year, included the installation of 193,000 square feet of landscaping along Tapo Canyon Road and a new traffic signal at Tapo Canyon and Los Angeles Avenue.
