A sheriff’s deputy wounded a 25-year-old Los Angeles man shortly after responding to reports of a gang fight in South-Central Los Angeles on Saturday evening, authorities said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was shot in the chest and thigh, said the nursing supervisor at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition Saturday night.

About 7 p.m., several deputies went to a house in the 1440 block of 105th Street, which is in an unincorporated part of the county near Athens, said Deputy Irma Becerra. Residents had called about a fight involving 10 to 15 gang members and reported a man with a gun.

When deputies arrived at the house, a man in front of the home appeared to be armed with a pistol, Becerra said. The man ran to the back of the house, and deputies chased him, she said.

Deputies said they yelled at the man to stop, and he turned and pointed the pistol at them, Becerra said. A deputy fired several rounds, she said.

A loaded pistol was recovered from the victim, Becerra said. No further details were available.

A neighbor said she heard some people running and someone yelling to stop before hearing two shots.

The area is a big draw for gangs, the neighbor said. “I live in Dodge City.”
