World Series : Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves : NOTEBOOK

Each team made a minor roster move before Saturday’s game: the Braves substituted right-hander David Nied for left-hander Kent Mercker and the Blue Jays added infielder Rance Mulliniks in place of third baseman Tom Quinlan, who didn’t play in the AL playoffs against Oakland.

Mercker, who pitched three scoreless relief innings in two appearances against the Pirates, injured cartilage in his ribs when a teammate jumped on his back during the Braves’ celebration Wednesday after winning the playoffs.

Brave Manager Bobby Cox also said he would consider starting Leibrandt or Smith in Game 4, depending on Glavine’s performance Saturday. If Glavine struggled, it’s likely Cox would give him an extra day’s rest and start Leibrandt.

“We’ll see how Tom does and if he throws a lot of pitches,” Cox said. “It all depends on how Tom feels (Monday), his throwing day.”

Mulliniks, 36, had only three plate appearances and two at-bats for the Blue Jays this season because of back soreness. He spent most of the season on the disabled list.
