Randall L. Makinson, the director/curator of Gamble House in Pasadena, an internationally recognized architectural landmark of the turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts movement, has retired.

Makinson, who held the job for 26 years, becomes director emeritus. Edward R. Bosley III, associate director since 1990, has been appointed director, said Victor Regnier, interim dean of the USC School of Architecture.

Gamble House, designed by American architects Henry and Charles Greene and built in 1908, is maintained by USC and the city. It was designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1978.

Makinson is a leading scholar in historic preservation and an authority on the Greenes. He said he will continue his research, work on several books in progress and remain in private practice as a restoration consultant.

Monrovia Mayor Robert Bartlett has been elected first vice president of the League of California Cities, Mayor Pro Tem Lara Blakely announced Tuesday. The position will lead to Bartlett’s elevation to president of the league next year, Blakely said. The league is a planning group representing 468 cities across California. “I’m very proud that a city the size of Monrovia has a mayor in this very influential position,” Blakely said. “It’s a big honor,” Bartlett replied. “I look on it as a challenge.”
