THE DAMAGE DONE: The MTV generation has been deluged with messages about AIDS and drugs, but the link between the two isn’t being made, says Michael Franti of the rap duo Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. So he’s urging musicians to promote clean-needle exchange programs.

“Condoms and safe sex sell videos real well,” he says. “But the idea of a junkie or a prisoner infected with AIDS is (more controversial) and people are reluctant to get involved.” So far, Franti’s biggest supporter is U2. When the Heroes opened for the Irish band recently at Yankee Stadium in New York, an information booth was set up. A similar booth will be at the Heroes’ Nov. 4 show at the Whisky in West Hollywood. Deee-Lite and Billy Bragg have also expressed interest.
