Police have identified a 22-year-old suspect in the killing of a convenience store clerk during an armed robbery last week, authorities said Monday.

Homicide investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Miguel Naranjo Zamora, 22, in connection with the shooting death of Varinder Singh of Cypress, police officials said. Singh, 22, died in a hospital intensive care unit on Oct. 22, three days after an armed robber grabbed $65 and then shot him in the chest before fleeing the 24-hour store at Harbor Boulevard and 1st Street.

Police said they do not know what prompted the shooting because Singh did not resist the gun-wielding robber’s demands, handing over the cash immediately, according to a video recording and witnesses, who were not injured.

Police identified Zamora based on a recording of the robbery taken with a store video camera. They said Zamora should be considered armed and dangerous and not approached.

He is described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall and 125 pounds and has a tattoo on his left wrist that reads “MOM,” police said.

Zamora had collar-length black hair and was last seen wearing a blue jacket and Levis, police said. He frequents Santa Ana’s west side and Riverside, where he has family, police said.

Zamora has two outstanding warrants from unrelated incidents: an alleged armed theft of a car in Santa Ana in August and a $500 traffic warrant, police said.

He has no known recent address, investigators said.

Family members were planning Singh’s burial Monday. Singh’s parents are scheduled to fly to Orange County from India this week, said Amrit Kaur Sidhu, 33, his aunt. The funeral ceremony will take place in Orange County, but a date has not been set, she said.

Singh came to Orange County last year from India’s northern Punjab region and had recently begun working at the Santa Ana 7-Eleven, family members said.
