Mike Gartner caught and passed Maurice Richard for ninth place on the all-time goal-scoring list by scoring twice as the New York Rangers routed Philadelphia, 8-4, Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

“I better enjoy this while I can. I may not get two goals for the rest of the season,” Gartner said.

With his two scores, the 544th and 545th of his career, Gartner surpassed the legendary “Rocket.”

“It’s pretty amazing company,” said Gartner, who moved past another Hall of Famer, Stan Mikita, last week. “I’m not going to put myself in his company. If other people want to, they can, but I know it’s an exaggeration.”

St. Louis 4, San Jose 1--Nelson Emerson had a goal and an assist as the Blues took out some early-season frustration on the woeful Sharks in St. Louis.

The Blues ended a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) and won for only the third time (3-6-1), even though Brett Hull failed to score a goal for the fifth consecutive game.

It was the eighth loss in a row for the Sharks, who haven’t won since beating Winnipeg on opening night and have been outscored, 47-22.

Winnipeg 6, Washington 2--Bob Essensa made 21 of his 37 saves in the first period at Winnipeg, and Evgeny Davydov and Keith Tkachuk each had two goals for the Jets (4-6).

Essensa was bombarded in the first period as the Capitals (3-6) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Peter Bondra and Paul MacDermid.
