The number of takeoffs and landings at Van Nuys Airport, the nation’s busiest general-aviation airport, jumped 10.5% in August compared to the same period a year ago, according to a report by the Los Angeles Department of Airports.

The airport recorded about 52,900 takeoffs and landings in August, compared to about 47,850 in August, 1991, according to the monthly report.

Airport spokeswoman Stacey Geere said the airport usually has an increase in recreational flights during the summer, but she said airport officials could find no clear reason for the increase.

Meanwhile, 2,846 passengers used Palmdale Regional Airport in August, a 15.6% increase over the same period last year, according to the monthly report. Only one airline, SkyWest, serves that airport.

In 1990, when the airport was served by America West and SkyWest, it carried a record 50,000 passengers. But America West pulled out in June, 1991, citing low passenger levels.
