Local and regional agencies have a long way to go in promoting and providing contracts to women and minorities and may need state oversight to reach reasonable goals, Assemblywoman Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) said Wednesday after a daylong hearing on the issue.

Moore grilled officials with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works and other agencies on their efforts to diversify their workplaces and target women and minorities for outside contracts.

Assembly hearing--A Metropolitan Digest item Thursday incorrectly stated that officials from the Los Angeles Department of Public Works testified at an Assembly hearing on affirmative action. The officials were from the Department of Water and Power.

“There’s a lot of work to be done,” said Moore, who is chairwoman of the Assembly Select Committee on Equal Opportunity. “As the state gets more diverse, the state has to get involved and provide oversight.”
