Creedence Clearwater Revival, “Cosmo’s Factory”, (1970), <i> Fantasy</i>

The Beatles were disintegrating. The rock ‘n’ roll world had a void to fill. Creedence Clearwater Revival was just the thing.

In July of 1970, CCR released “Cosmo’s Factory,” named for drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford’s rehearsal room. The album spawned six hit singles and spent 69 weeks on the charts.

It has stock rock numbers like “Up Around the Bend” and “Travelin’ Band.” There’s a country-twang jingle, “Lookin’ Out My Back Door,” with sly drug connotations. There’s a tremendous cover of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” that rivals Marvin Gaye’s version. Not to mention the spooky Vietnam boogie, “Run Through the Jungle,” and the politically chastising “Who’ll Stop the Rain.” All in all, CCR’s best.
