Auxiliary Donates $100,000 to Motion Picture Fund

Screen Smart Set Auxiliary for the Motion Picture and Television Fund honored Burt Reynolds at its Oct. 21 gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire and presented a $100,000 check to the fund, making a total of more than $3 million raised to date. The 500 guests at the 24th annual auction and fashion show watched celebrities model fashions donated by Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews, Blake Edwards, Ginny Mancini and others.

The Downtown Women’s Center held its annual benefit dinner and silent auction Oct. 20 at Casa Italiana in downtown Los Angeles. The $75,000 raised will provide services for mentally ill and elderly homeless women in Los Angeles’ Skid Row.

Friends of Julia Ann Singer Center raised $130,000 at a Sept. 17 luncheon. Funds will provide programs and services for emotionally disturbed children and their families. The center is affiliated with Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services. Event co-chairwomen were Deedy Oberman and Anita Hecht.

The Paul D. Martin Memorial Fund, an organization that provides medical and social services for patients with AIDS, will receive more than $6,000 from Stanley Waksler Casselman, who spearheaded a silent art auction featuring his works and those of seven other artists at his studio Oct. 3.

City of Hope National Medical Center, Arthritis Foundation and Concern II will share $165,000 raised Sept. 21 at the Invitational Charity Golf Classic sponsored by KABC Talkradio and El Caballero Country Club. The fund-raiser, including a banquet and live and silent auctions, was co-hosted by Ken Minyard and Roger Barkley.

Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women received a $16,756 grant from the California Community Foundation to maintain a two-year program in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties for the prevention of abuse of deaf and hearing-impaired children.

Los Angeles Regional Foodbank has announced receipt of an $80,000 grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase a new computer system.

The T. J. Martell Foundation received the $40,000 net proceeds from the Academy of Country Music’s 10th celebrity golf tournament, held Oct. 12 at the De Bell Golf Course in Burbank. The foundation and its West Coast Division, Neil Bogart Memorial Laboratory, provide research on cancer, AIDS and leukemia in children. The tournament, hosted by Sawyer Brown, was followed by a banquet at the Castaways restaurant.

Aid for AIDS raised $12,000 at its fourth annual garden party Oct. 11 in Hancock Park. The benefit was underwritten by Stephen Buxbaum, Bill Rosendah, Kenneth P. Hahn and others. Plants and flowers sold at auction were donated by Aloha Flowers, the Arranger, Arrow Market, Darling’s Flowers and others.

L.A. County/USC Medical Center received $2,500 from Select Copy Systems of Southern California as part of Select’s support of community programs. The funds will provide supplies for the playroom, birthday presents and outings for patients in the Pediatric Pavilion’s Child Life Program.

AIDS Project Los Angeles announced receipt of a $55,000 grant from Burroughs Wellcome Co. to expand APLA’s Treatment Education Program. The program is designed to educate people with HIV and give health-care providers the latest information about approved and experimental therapies.

The Guardians of the Jewish Homes for the Aging of Greater Los Angeles raised $700,000 at its annual Adopt a Parent Campaign dinner Sept. 19 at the Century Plaza Hotel. Comedian Joan Rivers entertained.
