Penn State quarterback John Sacca is out for the rest of the season after injuring his left knee in practice Wednesday.

Sacca, a 6-2, 200-pound sophomore, was the starting quarterback during the first seven games.

Junior Kerry Collins, who had his first start last weekend in leading Penn State (6-2) to a 40-26 victory over West Virginia, will start Saturday against Brigham Young.

A judge sentenced Alabama sophomore wide receiver David Palmer to two years probation in a drunk-driving case Thursday and told him he would go to jail if arrested again for DUI during the probation.

Palmer, 19, pleaded guilty after Tuscaloosa County District Judge Gay M. Lake Jr. refused to grant him youthful offender status. Palmer also pleaded guilty to a speeding charge.

The Sept. 6 drunk-driving arrest was Palmer’s second in less than three months.

Atlantic Coast Conference rushing leader Terry Kirby likely will miss Virginia’s game Saturday against sixth-ranked Florida State as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury, Coach George Welsh said. . . . A knee injury will sideline Oregon State freshman quarterback Don Shanklin for at least the next two games, the school said.
