A 13-year-old boy was wounded in a gang-related shooting as he was walking through a schoolyard Friday evening. Police were still looking for his assailants.

The boy, whose name was withheld because he is a juvenile, underwent surgery and his index finger was amputated, said Garden Grove Police Lt. Chuck Gibbs. The victim is in stable condition.

Police said the boy was walking across the grounds of Parkview Elementary School at 12272 Wilken Way at 6:30 p.m. when he was confronted by a group of young men, ages 15 to 18. One of them pressed a handgun against the boy’s head, Gibbs said.

The victim grabbed the barrel and pushed it away just as a shot was fired and injured his hand. His assailants fled.

Gibbs said the shooting was gang-related, and the investigation is continuing.
