Toreros Get Plenty of Help in Victory

Eight players scored for the University of San Diego’s soccer team on Sunday in a 9-1 victory over Gonzaga.

Only Matt Gerlach scored twice for USD (13-4), which also got goals from: Emile Wakim, Manny Rodriguez, Alex Streicek, Steve Shipley, Guillermo Jara, Chugger Adair and David Bell. Gonzaga fell to 2-14.

San Diego State, in its final home game of the season, scored the winning goal with less than two minutes remaining for a come-from-behind victory over UC Irvine, 4-3.

Michael Succi put Irvine ahead, 3-2, 37 minutes into the game, and the lead held until Boyd Lyon tied it with 17 minutes left. Willie Franklin later kicked in what turned out to be the game-winner.

Bill Demke and Andy Morrone also scored for the Aztecs (10-7-1, 3-4 in the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation). Charles Higley scored the first two goals for Irvine (7-11, 1-6).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Lorena Snyder made four saves to lead San Diego State to a 3-0 victory over St. Mary’s. Lynn Murray, Shawn Viloria and Kim Henry scored for SDSU (6-7-).
