SAN DIEGO : Man Killed When Shanty Catches Fire
A sleeping man was burned to death Monday morning when a smoldering cigarette ignited his mattress and burned his plywood shanty to the ground, authorities said.
Antonio Diaz, 36, a native of Mexico, was killed in the 2:20 a.m. fire at his shanty in the area behind the Evergreen Nursery in the 7700 block of Black Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos.
Diaz was employed by Springtime Growers, a neighboring nursery, a county medical examiner’s spokeswoman said.
The Metro Arson Strike Team determined that the cause of the fire was accidental, a MAST spokesman said.
