HAWTHORNE : Baby Ostrich Escapes From Handlers at Airport
One of 20 baby ostriches being shipped to a Mexican zoo got away from its handlers at the Hawthorne Municipal Airport on Monday, a spokeswoman for the Wildlife Way Station said.
“The Hawthorne Airport people felt if anyone found this ostrich they would be calling us (at the Wildlife Way Station), which is a logical conclusion,” said Martine Colette.
“Baby ostriches are delicate. We are asking people for its safe return, because if we don’t get it to safety and proper food, it’s going to die,” the way station spokeswoman said. Colette said the crews were loading the birds onto a plane at the airfield at 12101 Crenshaw Blvd. when workers noticed that one ostrich was missing. Anyone who sees it is asked to call the way station at (818) 899-5201.
