SUBS & ROSES: Secretary of State March Fong Eu put out a stern warning that it was against federal law to tie in giveaways with proof you voted. That didn’t dampen the merchants’ enthusiasm. . . . The 99 Cents store in Garden Grove gave free calendars to those who flashed their voting stubs. Tropical Images in Irvine gave each voter a free rose. And at the Subway sandwich shop in Costa Mesa, the line was out the door for free sandwiches--cheese or bologna, extra for onions. “Astonishing,” says Eu staffer Melissa Warren, who says they were all illegal.
