Monterey Park : Atlantic Square Opening

Share

The Atlantic Square redevelopment project, built over the objection of slow-growth advocates, will open Nov. 14, nearly five years after it was proposed.

The 210,000-square-foot shopping center was opposed because it required land condemnation and an investment of about $14 million by the city’s redevelopment agency.

The center will include a Ralphs market, Thrifty, Big 5, Music Plus, Pizza Hut and other chain stores at South Atlantic Boulevard and Riggin Street. Redevelopment agency officials project that the center eventually could generate nearly $500,000 in annual sales tax revenue.

Opening-day events, beginning at 9:30 a.m., will include exhibits by local groups and artists, a presentation on the city’s Harmony Month celebration and food booths.
