Beverly Hills : Concert Falls Short of Goal

Share

A city-backed gospel concert fell short of its original goal of raising $150,000 for needy residents of South-Central Los Angeles, but plans are already under way to present another concert next year.

The two-hour concert Oct. 25, featuring the Faithful Central Baptist Church Choir, grossed about $44,000, city spokesman Fred Cnnningham said Monday. Almost all of the money will be donated to the residents of the riot-torn area because almost everything needed to stage the fund-raiser was donated, he said. The money will be distributed by relief operations run by 10 South-Central churches.

The city knew that the Oct. 25 concert would have to be smaller than first planned because of short lead time, Cunningham said. The choir tours internationally and “we just had to get a date.”

About $25,000 of the tally came from corporate donations, but the city could draw more corporate sponsors by starting earlier, Cunningham said. Most corporate dollars are committed a year in advance, he noted. The city plans to get an early start on a similar cultural fund-raising event next year.

Although the concert did not meet its goal, it drew about 1,000 people, Cunningham said.
