Norris to Fight Lawlor in Non-Title Bout : Boxing: Event scheduled to be televised on Showtime.

It appears Terry Norris, the world junior middleweight champion from San Diego, finally will get an opportunity to box again.

Norris, whose last fight was a fourth-round knockout in May over Meldrick Taylor, and Pat Lawlor have agreed to fight on Dec. 4 at a site to be announced, Norris’ promoter Dan Goossen said Thursday.

Goossen said the fight will be televised on Showtime, but it will not be a pay-per-view event. Norris will not be risking his World Boxing Council title against Lawlor (18-2), who lost to John David Jackson in June for Jackson’s World Boxing Organization title.

Norris was supposed to defend his WBC title Sept. 26 against Simon Brown, but Brown came down with an illness the day before the bout. The Norris-Brown fight was rescheduled for Dec. 5 on Showtime Event Television, Showtime’s pay-per-view company, but the card was canceled because of a conflict with HBO’s free boxing show that night.

“We hope the third time’s the charm,” Goossen said.

The Norris-Lawlor fight will be joined by three other non-title bouts featuring Julio Caesar Chavez, Greg Haugen and Brown. The card will be co-promoted by Goossen and Don King. Goossen said the likely site will be in Nevada.

Goossen said he still expects Norris to fight Brown, but probably not until February.

But until then, Norris gets a tuneup against Lawlor, who has beaten former world champions Roberto Duran and Wilfredo Benitez.

“We needed a non-title fight,” Goossen said. “Lawlor’s a credible opponent for the fans, television and for Terry’s sack.”

Goossen said a Norris-Chavez fight at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium is still on the horizon.

“This whole scenario still sets up a super fight, but it could have happened sooner,” Goossen said. “It’s not good for the boxing fans that we have to wait for a great fight.”

Of course for that fight to occur, Norris must beat Lawlor and Brown and Chavez would have to win Dec. 4 and later against Haugen.
