The Atlanta Braves’ Lonnie Smith was among five players who filed for free agency Thursday.
A record 143 players have filed since the World Series ended, and 12 more are eligible to file by Sunday’s deadline.
Also filing were Detroit Tiger pitcher Walt Terrell, Milwaukee Brewer pitchers Jesse Orosco and Bruce Ruffin, and Philadelphia Phillie second baseman Wally Backman.
