La Verne : School Issue Faces Delays

Share

Any hopes that the City Council might have had for a quick dissolution of the Bonita Unified School District were deflated last week, when City Atty. Robert Kress outlined the legal process.

Kress told the council during Monday’s meeting that proponents of a La Verne school district must first gather signatures from 25% of the city’s registered voters. County and state officials then must review the petition and hold public hearing before deciding whether to place the issue on the ballot.

Although a simple majority vote would decide the issue, Kress noted that the question of who gets to vote often ends up in court.

Assistant City Manager Jeff Allred said the matter could take well over a year to settle.
