The rematch was a mismatch.

The Miami Dolphins, surprised at home by the Indianapolis Colts two weeks earlier, used two touchdown passes by Dan Marino and short touchdown runs by Mark Higgs and Tony Paige Sunday to defeat the Colts, 28-0.

“Everything worked,” said Marino, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 245 yards, including touchdowns to Keith Jackson and Fred Banks during the first half.

“We had a solid day offensively, and we needed it, because we had been struggling a little bit the last two weeks.”

It was the Colts’ second consecutive shutout loss since their 31-20 victory at Miami. The Colts lost, 26-0, at San Diego last week.

“For the second week in a row we couldn’t move the football and we couldn’t stop the other team,” Colt Coach Ted Marchibroda said.

The Dolphins (7-2), who won for the first time in three games, balanced Marino’s passing yards with 212 on the ground, including 107 by Higgs and 56 by Bobby Humphrey.

“If you look at the two games, when we played (the Colts) in Miami, we had a lot of turnovers, and the special teams didn’t play well, and we still should have won,” Marino said. “Today, we played a solid game all the way around.”

Miami had only one turnover, a fumble by rookie Bernie Parmalee at the Colts’ one-yard line in the closing minutes. The Colts (4-5) lost the ball twice on fumbles and twice on interceptions.

The Colts also received a blow when rookie defensive end Steve Emtman, the first player picked in the draft, suffered a sprained left knee late in the first quarter. The extent of damage won’t be known until tests today.
