LOS ANGELES : Man Pleads No Contest to Assaulting 3 in Riots

Share

A Los Angeles man pleaded no contest Monday to charges of assaulting three people at the intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues, where violence erupted after verdicts were announced in April in the Rodney G. King beating trial.

Lewis Curl Foster, 40, entered the plea Monday morning to three counts of assault during his arraignment in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Foster faced up to four years in prison, but under a plea-bargain agreement he will receive a two-year term when Judge Gibson Lee sentences him Nov. 23.

Foster allegedly beat motorist Manuel Vaca and also was charged with beating Vaca’s wife, Maria, and brother Alphonso. Prosecutors contended that, although Foster never actually touched Maria or Alphonso Vaca, his alleged attack on Manuel Vaca provoked an angry mob to assault the other Vacas.
