BASEBALL
Former major league manager Russ Nixon was hired by the Padres to be their triple-A Las Vegas manager.
Nixon, 57, managed the Cincinnati Reds in 1982 and 1983, and the Atlanta Braves in 1988 and 1989 before being fired in 1990. The Reds and Braves finished in last place in each of the seasons he managed.
He was the bench coach this past season for the Seattle Mariners but was fired at the end of the season along with manager Bill Plummer and the rest of the coaching staff.
Nixon replaces Jim Riggleman, who was promoted in September as manager of the Padres.
The Padres also interviewed Cincinnati third base coach Sam Perlozzo, but he instead accepted a job Monday to be third base coach for the Seattle Mariners.
