An 11-year-old Oxnard boy suffered a broken right leg and severe head injuries when he was struck by a van and thrown 70 feet on Oxnard Boulevard near Five Points, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Monday when Hidalio Vega rode his bicycle diagonally across the boulevard, directly in front of a van driven by Deverne Louis Ash, 65, of Oxnard, according to Oxnard police.

Hidalio remained in critical condition at Ventura County Medical Center on Tuesday evening, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

Don Mulville, a traffic investigator for the Oxnard Police Department, said Ash probably will not be charged in connection with the accident. Ash had been traveling south and stopped immediately after the collision, police said.

He told police that he had been traveling at 30 to 35 m.p.h. and did not slow down before striking the boy because he did not see him, Mulville said.

Ash told police that his vision had been obscured by a large steel post with road signs, Mulville said.
