The top three quarterbacks in the state...

Share

The top three quarterbacks in the state are from the region, according to Cal-Hi Sports statistics. Keith Smith of Newbury Park High (2,704 yards), Davis Delmatoff of Hart (2,645) and Eric Bennett of Simi Valley (2,418) rank 1-2-3 after nine weeks of the regular season. Bobby Cowan of Saugus is ninth with 1,881 yards.

The first three also rank at the top of the touchdown list. Delmatoff has 32, and Bennett and Smith are tied with 26.

With a hot run to close the season, Delmatoff could threaten one of the Southern Section’s oldest single-season records. Former USC and NFL quarterback Pat Haden threw 42 scoring passes at Bishop Amat in 1970, still the section mark. Former Hart quarterbacks Jim Bonds (1986) and Ryan Connors (1991) are tied for third with 39.

Of course, somebody has to catch all of these passes. Newbury Park’s Jason Toohey and Leodes Van Buren rank 1-2 in the state. Toohey has 72 receptions and Van Buren is tied for second with 63.

Fahali Campbell of Camarillo is the region’s leading rusher and ranks fourth on the state list with 1,721 yards. Ramod Lee of Valley View in Moreno Valley--the school that produced state all-time rushing leader David Dotson--is first with 1,793 yards. George Keiaho of Buena is 10th with 1,556.

Rushing: The numbers of Campbell and Scott Mitchell of Agoura, the Marmonte League’s top two rushers, are called frequently.

Campbell has carried on 258 of the Scorpions’ 471 offensive plays, 55% of the time. Mitchell, who has rushed for 1,413 yards, has 215 carries in 474 plays, 45%.

Montclair Prep’s Eliel Swinton moved into seventh place on the Southern Section all-time rushing list with 4,930 yards. With 175 yards last week against Marshall Fundamental, Swinton passed Aaron Emanuel (Quartz Hill, 1982-84), Derek Brown (Servite, ‘86-88), Eric Bieniemy (Bishop Amat, ‘84-86) and Mickey Cureton (Centennial, ‘64-66). Next up for Swinton are Napolean Kaufman (Lompoc, ‘88-90, 5,146) and Steve Tetrick (L.A. Baptist, ‘70-72, 5,181). Swinton also has 60 rushing touchdowns, two shy of 10th place on the Southern Section list.

Chaminade’s Justin Giovannettone and Franklin Saunders each has rushed for 100 yards in the same game five times, including three weeks in a row. In another game, Giovannettone rushed for 128 and Saunders for 95. Giovannettone has gained at least 100 yards in every game except the opener. . . . Kilpatrick’s Jonathan Russaw has rushed for 100 yards six games in a row, including 201 last week against St. John’s.

Canyon tailback Ed Williams, who has rushed for 1,387 yards and 17 touchdowns, needs 339 yards and six touchdowns to pass Lance Cross for second place on the all-time Canyon rushing and rushing touchdowns lists. Barring injury, Williams should overtake Chris Peery (3,953 yards, 63 touchdowns) for first place in both categories next season.

Offense: Quarterbacks Jim Landress of Granada Hills and Ryan Venturine of El Camino Real each picked the perfect time to peak last week. Each threw two scoring passes to double his seasonal output, and each team desperately needed the production. El Camino Real defeated Chatsworth, 43-42, and Granada Hills beat Taft, 14-12.

For the second consecutive week, Birmingham (5-3, 4-2) was outgained yet won by more than a touchdown. The Braves’ offense ranks last among East Valley League teams, but Birmingham is in second place.

Palmdale quarterback Terrence Zenno has accounted for 1,982 of the team’s 2,506 offensive yards. He has rushed for more yards (437) than the rest of his team combined (410) and has had a hand in 17 of the team’s 26 touchdowns.

Water polo: Senior driver Jack Kocur of Royal broke Devin Hurst’s scoring record of 336 goals and his own single-game mark of 15 last week with 19 goals in a 37-0 victory over Simi Valley. The 19 goals is the fourth-highest single-game total in Southern Section history. Kocur added six against Agoura, bringing his total to 358 and his season total to 128. Kocur would move into fifth place on the all-time Southern Section scoring list with six more goals.

Statistics through Monday.
