ANTELOPE VALLEY : Crime Up 18.4% in 1st 9 Months of ’92

Reported crime in the Antelope Valley rose 18.4% during the first three quarters of this year compared with the same period last year, led by increases of 33% in homicides and 47% in robberies, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department statistics released Thursday.

The area’s tally of eight major offenses, so-called Part One crimes, rose from 9,006 through September, 1991, to 10,664 through September, 1992. Homicides increased from 21 to 28, and reported robberies climbed from 283 to 417, the department said.

Throughout the valley, reported assaults were up nearly 21%, burglaries up 20%, larceny up 13% and grand theft auto up 24%.

The only category to show a decline was reported rapes, down 6%.

During the same period, the valley’s population increased 3.7% to 283,000 people, the department said.
