Berganio Shoots 68, Arizona Leads Field by 2

David Berganio, formerly of Alemany High, paced Arizona to a two-shot lead Friday after the opening round of the Golf World-Palmetto Dunes Collegiate at Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Arizona State had a 9-over-par 297 for a four-shot edge in the 12-team women’s field.

Berganio, a senior, shot a 68 and Manny Zerman, a senior from Durban, South Africa, had a 69 to lead Arizona, the defending NCAA champion. Oklahoma State was in second place at 281, followed by New Mexico (286), Florida (288) and Virginia, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Alabama (all at 290).

Oklahoma State’s Kris Cox, a freshman from Lafayette, La., was the individual leader in the 18-team men’s field with a 5-under-par 67 on the 6,651-yard, par-72 Arthur Hills course.

Tied for second at 68 were Berganio, Chris Tidland of Oklahoma State and Hans Kersting of New Mexico.

Second to Arizona State in the women’s division was Duke at 301, followed by defending tournament champion Tulsa (302), Furman (303) and South Florida (309).

Furman’s Caroline Peek, a freshman from Studio City, and Tulsa’s Sofie Eriksson, a sophomore from Almo, Sweden, were tied for first at even-par 72 on the 6,200-yard Hills Course at Palmetto Hall.

Tied for third a shot behind were Emilee Klein of Arizona State and Julie Brand of Miami. Klein played at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks.

The Moodswings girls’ softball team has scheduled tryouts at two San Fernando Valley sites, beginning Sunday.

Tryouts for the fast-pitch 14-and-under team are set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Granada Hills Recreation Center and 6 p.m. Friday at Winnetka Recreation Center.

Tryouts for the fast-pitch 16-and-under and 18-and-under teams will be held Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 at Granada Hills Recreation Center.
