TUSTIN — A California Highway Patrol officer was injured and a Santa Ana Freeway transition road was closed for about two hours early Saturday after a small acid spill.
The officer, who was not identified, suffered only minor injuries when exposed to five gallons of hydrochloric acid spilled from a pickup truck traveling south on the transition road to the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway, authorities said.
The driver was carrying three five-gallon barrels of the acid in his truck when the spill occurred, officials said. It was not immediately known why the driver was transporting the material or whether he would be cited in the incident, officials said. The freeway was closed from 6:30 a.m. to about 8:45 a.m., causing some traffic to back up, officials said.
