Potshots at Lawyers

Share

I can’t let Tony Perry’s At Large (Nov. 9) column, “Taking Aim at Attorneys,” pass without comment, and it is not only because I am an attorney. I simply fail to see any humor in the notion of hunting human beings, however publicly vilified the targeted group may be.

One need only review the headlines of 1992 to be reminded of how violent American society has become, and of how that violence is frequently visited upon innocent victims who are scapegoats for society’s ills. All too often ethnic and racial prejudice, fueled by stereotypes perpetuated in the mass media, is the trigger for violent outbursts. Lest this connection with lawyer humor seem far-fetched, recall the anti-lawyer epithets included in the graffiti at a recent synagogue desecration in our own San Diego.
